Everybody Needs A Hobby of the Day: 19-year-old Rhiannon Brooksbank–Jones of Beeston, Notts, recently underwent surgery to lengthen her tongue’s reach so she could better pronounce certain words in Korean.
The future Korean Studies major says she struggled with particular sounds because of her thicker-than-average lingual frenulum — that flappy thing that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth.
Rhiannon says a lingual frenectomy — a short procedure that extends the tongue by about half-an-inch — was her only option. “My pronunciation was very ‘foreign’,” she says, “but now I can speak with a native Korean accent.”
